Media salespeople are trained to sell you advertising.

Most, if not all of their training, is how to get your business, not how to make your advertising work.

Think about your media rep.  She tells you how great her product is.  She has ratings to prove more people read/watch/listen to her media than any of her competitors.  She offers you a "package" of inches or spots probably at a discount over regular rates.

The whole transaction was based on her product, not yours.

Now that you've committed your budget, how are your ads prepared?  Your rep comes to find out what you want to advertise and takes back a set of notes to the "creative department." 

Then, someone (who has never been in your business) prepares your ads.  That person (who will be creating 20-30 ads today) doesn't know anything more about you than the salesperson puts on the order form: "Big Sale! Save Money! Sale ends Sunday!"

 

Is it any wonder that your ads don't stand out?
